The Wilson Boys Soccer Team’s 2017 season has been riddled with injuries. But, as they prepare for Tuesday’s 1st Round playoff game (“play-in” game) vs. Sprague, the Trojans are finally healthy. Trojans Head Coach Frank Mathews couldn’t be happier.

“We have had two broken arms, two concussions, a broken rib, two pulled groins, and even I have been dealing with a concussion for about a month now” Mathews says. “Last week when we played Madison we only had 13 players available… and we still have yet to use the same starting lineup twice in a row this entire season”

Late last night another piece of the Trojans lineup was finally put back into place, as one of their only seniors Tyson Horn was finally cleared to play. “Tyson is a defensive central midfielder whose strengths lie in his defensive toughness and his ability to shoot from long distances” Last year Tyson scored on a 45-yard free kick, a shot that his coach says was one of the best goals he has ever seen. This season, though, Tyson has only been able to play in a few games because of a broken hand.

Along with Horn, the team is led by another top returning player in the PIL, senior Hayden Smith. “Hayden is an attacking central midfielder who is one of the most creative players in the state” says Mathews. Smith leads the team with 8 goals and is a continuous threat when he touches the ball. Hayden has only missed two games this season due to a concussion earlier in the season.

One player who has had to step up for the Trojan this season is mid-fielder Logan Clizer, who has remained injury free all season. Playing almost every minute of the season at center midfield, his coach says “he has really been the backbone of the team this year with his gritty play. He is a very skilled player, but his best attribute is his heart and will to win 50/50 balls in midfield.”

The Trojans travel to take on the Sprague Olympians later today at 7:00 pm.
