The Newport Cubs (located on the Central Oregon Coast) play in the Oregon West Conference, which meant they would be travelling into the Willamette Valley for all their away games. The dangerous trip over the coastal mountain pass made live game broadcasts a great logistical option for their growing fan base. Game broadcasts of a few notable home games also made sense, as they would generate a buzz around Newport.

Of the 7 regular season games we broadcast, the Cubs lost 3 of them, their only 3 losses of the season. 2 of them were against their league rival, the team they would eventually play (and beat) in the State Final, the Stayton Eagles. From those 3 losses the Cubs learned they needed to improve if they were going to repeat as State Champs in 2017.

The Cubs entered the playoffs as the #8 seed, meaning they would need to win 3 games on the road, all against higher seeded teams, to make it to the Final. From Phoenix to Seaside to Brookings-Harbor, Oregon SportsBeat travelled with the Cubs team and live broadcast every game in their historic run to the 2017 State Title. Their Semi-final game was on a Tuesday with a 2 pm start time in Brookings-Harbor, a 4 and 1/2 hour drive from Newport. Most fans could not make the trip in person because of work or school, but they were able to watch the game live on OregonSportsBeat.com. That game was live streamed into classrooms in the grade school, where hundreds of youth soccer players and fans, the future of Newport Soccer, cheered on their varsity team. The culture of Newport Soccer was being ethced in the memory of the entire town, as Newport finally won a highly contested match in PK’s and advance to the state final.

You can watch all of the Cubs 2017 game broadcasts here.

As a side note- the Cubs soccer program MADE MONEY off of their game broadcasts in 2017. Sponsorship sales exceeded the cost of the service, with all revenue going back to the Cubs soccer program. To learn more about our sponsorship program, please visit our Sponsorship Information page here.

Oregon SportsBeat will be broadcasting the Cubs 2018 season as they aim for their 3rd State Title.
